2010 Finals Series

Congratulations to the North Ryde, Woolooware, Hurstville and New Brighton Teams who won their Quarter Final Contests. This coming weekend 28th November, the Contests are:

North Ryde v Woolooware at Ashlar GC - 10:47 am

Hurstville v New Brighton at Cronulla GC - 12:30 pm

2010 Finals Series

Congratulations to all the Division winners! The Finals Seeding and the Finals Draw are now available on the web site.

For Finals Series Contests, each Match must be played until a result is achieved; that is, if a Match is All-Square after 18 holes, the Match continues from the first hole until one player is up.

The Reserve Match is played but the result does not count to the Contest result.

If a player plays in 2 Division or Finals Series Matches, including Reserve Matches, they are eligible for the Final.

Team Managers and/or Host Clubs should ensure the results are faxed to JNJG and communicated to AAP.

Another Hole-in-One!

This time it's Ryde-Parramatta junior, Alex Yip, who aced Ryde-Parramatta's 130 metre 12th hole. Alex hasn't been playing much due to School Certificate studies, so the ace comes as a welcome surprise. Alex helped Ryde-Parramatta to 4 to 1 1/2 defeat of Pennant Hills. Good work, Alex! A box of Pro-V1s is on its way to Alex.

Hole-in-One

Congratulations to New Brighton junior, Stephen Lowndes, who scored a hole-in-one at the 7th hole at New Brighton in New Brighton's 3 to 2 1/2 defeat of St Michaels on the 17th October. Stephen used a 5-iron on the uphill, 168 metre 168 metre Par 3. A box of Pro V1s is on its way to Stephen.

Handicaps

Girls' Handicaps:

The Conditions of Competition are specific regarding girls' handicaps.

Condition 13 d states: The Girl's Match Handicap = Women's Australian Handicap + (AWCR - AMCR).

Condition 13 c states: Girls’ maximum handicap is 36. Girls whose Match handicap (see Condition 13d) is greater than 36 may still play but they play off a handicap of 36.

Note that when calculating a girl's handicap, the AWCR and AMCR are used. The course Par is irrelevant.

How to use the Match Index:

To determine the number of strokes given or received for a match, subtract the lower handicap from the higher handicap. The resulting difference is how many strokes the lower handicap player must give the higher handicap player.

Strokes are given or received on the holes where the Match Index is less than, or equal to, the handicap difference. So if the handicap difference is 5, then a stroke is given or received on holes 4, 8, 10, 12, 16.

The Men's Match Index is used.

Tee Times

With each Round now comprising 9 tee times, there has been some concern about Rounds that are scheduled to start at 1:00 pm. With 8 minute tee intervals this means that the last group starts at 2:04 pm and, for a 4.5 hour Contest, will finish at 6:34 pm.

For the 10th October, sunset is at approximately 7:04 pm on the coast. This means there is daylight until around 7:15 pm.

It is important for host clubs to schedule the Contests in the order they appear on the draw.

2010 Encourage Shield Draw

The Encourage Shield Draw is now available via the Draw tab above.

Please check the draw and email any questions to Nick Evans at jnjg.

There are 48 Teams this year, so there are 8 Divisions with 6 Teams in each Division.

This has the following impacts:

  • There a no byes. Each Team plays 5 Division Rounds.
  • Each Host Club needs to allocate 9 tee times for each Division Round.
  • One Club in each Division does not host a Division Round. The Team from that Club therefore does not have a home Contest but does not play any other Team at their home course.
  • The Elimination Finals are not required and therefore the Quarter Finals and Semi Finals are brought forward 1 week. The Grand Final will still be on the 12th December. This allows a free weekend on the day of the Australian Open (5th December).

The new schedule is as below:

2010 Encourage Shield Schedule

Division Round 1 - 10th October 2010

Division Round 2 - 17th October 2010

Division Round 3 - 24th October 2010

Division Round 4 - 31st October 2010

Division Round 5 - 7th November 2010

Spare Weekend - 14th November 2010

Quarter Finals - 21st November 2010

Semi Finals - 28th November 2010

Final - 12th December 2010

2009 Champions

Dunheved Golf Club

The Dunheved Golf Club defeated the Hurstville Golf Club in the 2009 Encourage Shield final by 3 1/2 matches to 1 1/2.

Semi Finals

Congratulations to those teams who have made it through to the semi finals. The draw for the semi finals and grand final has been posted under the draw tab.

Finals Update - 20/11/2009

Please note that NO matches can be squared after 18 holes. If a match is even after 18 holes the players' must continue to the 1st hole played in their match and keep going until a winner is determined. Shots are allocated on the same holes as they were during the first 18 holes of the match. The reserve match for all finals matches does NOT count towards the overall results however, still should be played.

Please Note: If a match is called off due to inclement weather and is unable to resume then if 9 holes are played the current result of the match is the final result.

Finals Update - 16/11/2009

The Finals Seeding and Draw are now available. Please contact Nick Evans or the JNJGF if you have any questions about the seeding or draw.

Finals Update - 10/11/2009

Congratulations to each of the Division winners. Divisions 2, 3 and 4 are yet to complete Round 3 and so we cannot announce the draw for the Finals' Contests.

Suspension or Postponement of Play - Round 3 25/10/2009

Some Contests in Round 3 did not start or were not completed. Please refer to the Conditions of Competition, Condition 8 for the procedure.
Note the following clarifications:
If a Match (and therefore a Contest) started, the Matches and the Contest must be resumed at the same course and at a time agreed to by the Team Managers and the Host Club. If this is not possible, then see Condition 8f.
If no Matches (and therefore the Contest) did not start, then the Contest can be halved or it may be played on any day up to and including the 15th November 2009 and at any golf course. It is the responsibility of the Team Managers to agree a date, time and course. Two Contests originally scheduled for the same course do not necessarily need to be played at the same course. Please email tournaments@jnjgf.com with details of the Contests.
A Contest will not be halved by default if we do not receive a Match Results Form. If we have not received a Match Results Form by 5:00 pm on 16th November 2009, the relevant Contest will be deemed "not played" and no Contest points or Matches will be recorded.
Please email tournaments@jnjgf.com if you have any questions.

Committee Decision - 13/10/2009

In Round 1 several players did not have current Golf Australia Handicaps. The Format of Play for Encourage Shield is 'Handicap Match Play' (Condition 6 a). Furthermore, players must use the Handicap recorded on GolfLink on the day of the Contest (Condition 13 a).
It is therefore implicit in the Conditions of Competition that players must have a Golf Australia handicap.
The spirit of the Encourage Shield is to encourage young players and so a player who does not have a Golf Australia handicap may play in match but he is disqualified. If both players in a match do not have a Golf Australia handicap, then both players are disqualified (that is, the match is not halved).
Please also use the latest Match Results Form that includes a space for recording each players GolfLink number. GolfLink numbers must be recorded on the Match Results Form.

Encourage Shield News - 7/10/2009

Due to the withdrawal of Bexley and Kogarah teams, the draw for Divisions 1 & 2 has changed significantly. Please check the latest draw.

Encourage Shield News - 29/09/2009

Unless there is a prior agreement of all Teams within a Division the order of play of Contests is the order in which the Contests appear on the draw.
For example, for Division 1 Round 1 the order of Contests is (based on 7 minute tee time intervals):
12:30 Bonnie Doon v. Woolooware 1
12:51 Hurstville v. St Michaels
Host Clubs should notify Teams of the tee time for each Contest at least 5 days before the Round.

Encourage Shield News - 15/09/2009

The draw for Divisions 1 and 10 has changed. Teams in these Divisions should review the latest draw.

Encourage Shield News - 07/09/2009

The 2009 Encourage Shield Draw is now available - please go to the 'Draw' tab.

52 clubs and 64 teams have entered for 2009. Four Divisions have six teams.

Please review the draw and contact Nick Evans at JNJGF with any comments or questions.

If your club hasn't registered yet and wants to enter a team, please contact David Hirsch.

Encourage Shield News - 07/07/2009

Annual General Meeting 2009

Thank you to all delegates who attended the 2009 Encourage Shield Annual General Meeting.

Two significant proposals were passed unanimously:

Conditions of Competition

The rewritten Conditions of Competition were approved and are now available from the Conditions page. Please contact David Hirsch if you have any questions about the Conditions.

Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation (JNJGF) Partnership

Woolooware Golf Club proposed that JNJGF partner with the Encourage Shield to provide administrative, developmental and promotional services. The proposal was discussed at length and accepted unanimously. For 2009, JNJGF is responsible for receiving entries, managing the bank account, establishing the draw and publishing results. We believe that the partnership with JNJGF will provide benefits to Encourage Shield clubs and junior golfers throughout NSW.

Woolooware Golf Club and JNJGF will develop a Memorandum of Understanding for ratification at the 2010 AGM.
